Dr. Karabelas is a Partner at Care Capital. Previously, he was Head of Healthcare and CEO of worldwide Pharmaceuticals for Novartis AG from 1998 until July 2000. He had full responsibility for Novartis Pharma, Ciba Vision and Generics representing US $12 billion in annual sales. Included in these responsibilities was strategic and operational leadership of R&D with a budget in excess of US $2 billion. Prior to joining Novartis, Dr. Karabelas was Executive Vice President of SmithKline Beecham responsible for US operations, European operations, Regulatory, and Strategic Marketing. He has been responsible for numerous pharmaceutical product approvals and new product launches, including the launch of three US $1 billion products.
Dr. Karabelas was the Founder and Chairman of the Novartis Bio Venture Fund from July 2000 until December 2001. In this role he invested approximately $40 million in 14 portfolio companies.
Dr. Karabelas holds a Ph.D. in pharmacokinetics from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Massachusetts General Hospital, the Visiting Committee for Health Sciences and Technology at MIT, a Director of SykePharma Plc, Human Genome Sciences, Nitromed, Anadys, and a Trustee of Fox Chase Cancer Center and the Philadelphia University of the Sciences.
Dr. Jenkins received his M.D. from Cambridge University and has specialist accreditation in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He has been a consultant to pharmaceutical companies and investment and venture capital firms in the health sector since 1999. From 1997 to 1999, he served as Head of Clinical Development & Regulatory Affairs for Novartis Pharma AG, having held the same post pre-merger at Ciba-Geigy from 1992. Previously he was Head of Global Clinical Research at Glaxo, and before that a Deputy Head of the UK Drug Regulatory Agency. Dr. Jenkins is a member of the Board of Directors of Tanox Inc, ViroLogic Inc, Restoragen Inc, Eurand BV and British Technology Group.
Dr. Panettieri is a Professor of Medicine and Adjunct Associate Professor at the Wistar Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Panettieri received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his residency and fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Panettieris research interests focus on the cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating airway smooth muscle growth, an area with important implications in the pathogenesis and therapeutic management of asthma. In parallel with his basic science interests, Dr. Panettieri has been instrumental in initiating a comprehensive clinical program for the care of asthma patients at HUP and is involved in clinical investigations of the treatment of asthma.
Dr. Wenzel is a Professor at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center, Colorado. Graduating from the University of Florida, Dr. Wenzel received her Fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia in 1986. She currently holds the position of Professor at the University of Colorado, USA.
Dr. Wenzel's current research examines mechanisms of severe asthma. In addition, Dr. Wenzel is involved in a number of clinical trials examining the safety and efficacy of new asthma treatments. She is also involved specifically in trying to understand severe asthma better, to design better treatment. Dr. Wenzel is Co-Director of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Clinical Research Unit at National Jewish Medical and Research Center.
Dr. Wenzel is the past Chair of the Program Planning Committee Section on Allergy, Immunology and Inflammation of the American Thoracic Society (ATS), and past Chair of the International Conference Committee of ATS. She is a member of a number of other organizations including the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology; the European Respiratory Society; and was made a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians in 1992, and the AAAAI in 2001. She served as an advisor to the Pulmonary Allergy section of the FDA.
She is a reviewer for a number of journals, including American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine where she is on the editorial board; Clinical and Experimental Allergy; The Journal of Clinical Investigation; the European Respiratory Journal and International Archives of Allergy and Immunology. In addition, Dr. Wenzel has published over 65 articles in refereed journals, 19 book chapters and has produced abstracts and presented papers at over 74 national and international meetings. Dr. Wenzel is listed in "Top Doctors in America, 2001."
